School of Medicine Established in 1930, Duke University School of Medicine is the youngest of the nation's top medical schools. Ranked sixth among medical schools in the nation, the School takes pride in being an inclusive community of outstanding learners, investigators, clinicians, and staff where interdisciplinary collaboration is embraced and great ideas accelerate translation of fundamental scientific discoveries to improve human health locally and around the globe. Composed of more than 2,600 faculty physicians and researchers, nearly 2,000 students, and more than 6,200 staff, the Duke University School of Medicine along with the Duke University School of Nursing, and Duke University Health System comprise Duke Health, a world-class academic medical center. The Health System encompasses Duke University Hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke Health Integrated Practice, Duke Primary Care, Duke Home Care and Hospice, Duke Health and Wellness, and multiple affiliations. Be You. The Heaton research group is primarily interested in the study of respiratory RNA viruses. They have published work on viruses of the families: orthomyxoviridae, paramyxoviridae, and coronaviridae. The research in tehir laboratory is predominantly focused understanding the mechanisms of viral pathogenesis with the ultimate goal of developing new therapies that can be used to combat both current and future viral diseases. Be Bold. The Heaton Lab is seeking a technician to conduct research on the mechanisms underlying influenza A virus pathogenesis as well as the development of antiviral interventions. We use a range of experimental systems including biochemical assays, cell culture, primary tissue culture and animal models. Scientific project possibilities for the position are expected to focus primarily on the development of antiviral vaccines and therapeutics. The individual occupying this position is expected to: Devote ~10% of their time to lab administrative tasks such as ordering and lab organization Devote ~10% of their time to the preparation of general laboratory regents such as media and stock solutions Devote ~80% of their time to scientific research. While the specific details will vary by the project, the individual is expected to perform a variety of technical assays involved in the execution of biological research. Under the supervision of the principal investigator, they will also compile, analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Optimally, as the individual develops more skills and abilities, they will perform their research more independently. Applicants should have a BS or equivalent degree in a relevant field e.g. microbiology, genetics, immunology, cell biology or biochemistry. Research experience and working knowledge of standard molecular biology and biochemical techniques such as cloning and protein purification, as well as experience with cell culture is preferred.
